Thank you for voting yes for City Charter Amendment 2!
Posted on Jan 16, 2009 - 04:18 PM
On March 24th the City of Gainesville passed a charter amendment that will better protect our city conservation lands and parks. City-owned parks and conservation lands can no longer be sold or traded away by a simple majority vote of the City Commission. Charter Amendment 2 created a “Registry of Protected Public Places” on which the City Commission can place these lands. Once recorded into the Registry, public property can only be sold or converted to a different use if the voters agree. A similar charter amendment was passed in Alachua County on November 4th, and was one of the first to establish this process. This is a conservation victory for our urban parks and green spaces.
