WINTER BIRDING

From Calendar: ACT Events & Activities

Location: Earl P. Powers Park

From: January 16, 2016 at 7:30am to: 12:00pm

Details:

WHAT
Our goal will be a “Century Day” - seeing 100 species of bird in one day. To accomplish this, we will try to complete a loop through several protected areas in eastern Gainesville. Starting at Newnans Lake,  we will go to Prairie Creek Preserve, Tuscawilla Preserve, and end at Sweetwater Wetlands.

Winter is one of the best times to finds birds in Alachua County. Our mild winter climate makes this part of Florida just tolerable for the birds that migrate to south Florida and beyond (warblers, tanagers, etc.), and just bearable for the birds that shift slightly south to escape the snow and freezing conditions (sparrows, ducks, etc.). Consequently, this part of Florida has more diversity in the winter than most parts of the United States.

Of the 100 birds we hope to see, these are a few: Bald Eagle, Limpkin, Red-shouldered Hawk, American Kestrel, Red-headed Woodpecker, Pileated Woodpecker, Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Phoebe, Palm Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo, Swamp Sparrow and much more. We may even find a rarity or two like Henslow’s Sparrow.
