CHANGE OF PLANS!

Our Emory Cares event scheduled for Nov. 12 has moved to a new date and location because of the aftereffects of Hurricane Nicole in the area.

Here is our new plan:

Date: Nov. 18, 2022

Activity: Workday at Tuscawilla Preserve

Details: https://www.alachuaconservationtrust.org/upcoming-events/tuscawillaworkday

Emory Cares - Gainesville will join the Alachua Conservation Trust for a morning of preserve maintenance at Santa Fe River Preserve in Alachua, Florida. Together we will be walking the trails doing restoration work and trail maintenance. While there, we will experience and enjoy the beauty of the Preserve.

You do not have to be affiliated with Emory to participate. There is no minimum age for this event, but we ask that all participants under 18 be accompanied by a parent. All participants will be asked to complete the Alachua Conservation Trust Waiver of Liability, which will be available on site.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING

Closed-toe shoes, long pants, water, bug spray, hat and full water bottle are advised.

ABOUT THE PRESERVE

Santa Fe River Preserve protects 1,067 acres on the banks of the Santa Fe River near Worthington Springs. The preserve includes high bluffs along the river and an interesting tangle of floodplain forest where the New River converges with the Santa Fe.

The preserve has an interesting mix of flora which in turn support a wide diversity of wildlife. There are wild azaleas and rain lilies along the banks; river birch, cypress and tupelo in the bottomland; patches of longleaf pines and sand post oaks with wiregrass groundcover in the uplands, and a rich slope forest that surrounds Santa Fe Creek along the Gracy Trail. Bears frequent the river corridor, and rare and endangered mussels persist along the river bottom.
