Sea Turtles and Coastal Conservation

As part of Alachua Conservation Trust's Keep Florida Wild Virtual Series, we invite you to join us on May 27th from 6-7:30 PM for an informative presentation on sea turtles and local efforts to protect coastal habitat with Tonya Long and Rachel Tighe. Following the presentation, there will be a question and answer session with our speakers. ACT staff will also be available to answer your questions about coastal conservation easements.

Tonya Long is a Fish and Wildlife Biologist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Tonya received both her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Central Florida while doing research in the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. For the last 15 years, she has worked in sea turtle research and management all around Florida. Tonya has been with the FWC since 2012 and has spent most of her career with the agency focusing on evaluating and minimizing the impacts of artificial lighting on sea turtles.

Rachel Tighe is the Lighting Project Manager for Sea Turtle Conservancy and has worked with the organization for nearly 5 years. Rachel is a certified lighting specialist I in the lighting industry through the National Association of Innovative Lighting Distributors. She received her Bachelors of Science from the University of Central Florida and her Masters of Science in Biology with a strong focus in coastal ecosystems and marine ecology from the University of North Florida. Rachel has worked for environmental and conservation driven organizations for over 12 years with a focus in minimizing the anthropogenic threats to wildlife and the natural world. Rachel currently oversees all aspects of Sea Turtle Conservancy’s lighting project and strives to be a resource to those seeking to become more sea turtle friendly.
